The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Pressure is the second segment of the sixth episode in season 2 of The Berenstain Bears that aired on October 14, 2003. It is based on the book of the same name.

Summary[]

When the Bear family becomes too fixated with doing extracurricular activities, there's no time for them to visit Gramps and Gran or fix the family car (which is in need of a tune up).

Plot[]

One morning the family is trying to get everything they need since they are running all over the house and running late. Between Brother's baseball, soccer and karate, Sister's gymnastics, art and swimming, Mama's quilting club and PTA meetings as well as Papa's furniture orders and town council reforestation committee, the Bear Family can hardly squeeze in a visit to Gran and Gramps'. As Mama tries to start the car Brother and Sister both want to be dropped off first since their instructors don't like it when they’re late, but Papa tells them his meeting starts soon so he's getting dropped off first. Mama says that unless the car starts no one is going anywhere, eventually it starts and they are off. Before dropping off Papa he and Mama discuss getting the car fixed and soon.

Things don't go to well as everyone swaps bags and end up taking the wrong one. That night everyone talks about what happened today; Since Sister did not have her ballet slippers, she had to sit out the whole class and because she was late for art class, all she had time to paint was half a flower. Brother didn't have his own glove, so he had to borrow one (it was for the wrong hand), and he missed having ice cream with his team because his parents thought his Karate class was that day, but it's tomorrow, today was the class for the big kids. Papa thanks Mama for giving him the counsel notes, but because of that, Mama missed her quilting class for the third week in a row and due to her schedule, they had to buy out again. To keep their schedule from getting crazier, Papa decides to devise a huge schedule board to try to keep track of who's coming and who's going where and when. After everyone discusses what they do and which day it is, they're surprised to discover it's almost completely filled. Papa looks at the board and realizes with his schedule, he won't be able to go fishing anytime soon. The Cubs find out their soccer team made the playoffs, which means extra practices for them. Sister tells her parents that Lizzie is taking riding lessons and Brother wants to be part of that, it takes some insisting but Papa agrees but that is it. With only one empty space left on the schedule, Mama says that is the day she'll take the car into the shop. That night everyone, except Mama (who is trying to work out the pick up and drop offs) has nightmares about their schedule. They are soon woken up by their alarm clocks.

The next day, there are some unexpected changes to some of their schedules such as a PTA meeting at 2:30 that day and the cubs' soccer practice time and place have changed. Mama repeats 2:30 cheese and crackers and has the cubs repeat their schedules as well. Before they can go, Mama realizes she never got the car checked on which means they are going to be late. She is so stressed out that she bursts into tears as the cubs do. After Papa comes out and sees everyone crying, he calls off everything they are doing that day. The Bear Family decide to cut down on the number of their activities so Brother decides to stay with soccer and baseball and take a break from Karate. Sister decides to take Art and Ballet and still has room for riding lessons. Mama decides to volunteer at the Library and keep up with her quilting club. With the pressure off, they all now have the time to truly enjoy the things they do.

Differences From the Book[]

  • In the book, Brother and Sister took selected lessons. In the episode, the family had a cluttered schedule.
  • In the book, Gramps and Gran have a talk after Mama hangs up. This was omitted in the episode.
  • In the book while everyone has nightmares Mama is awake in bed, in the show while everyone is asleep she is trying to work out in her head her schedule and how to get everyone there on time.
  • In the book both Brother and Sister are already taking riding lessons, in the episode they want to sign up even after the schedule is already cluttered.
  • In the book, Papa was fixing the car, but Mama was in too big of a hurry to get the cubs to practice. In the episode, Mama keeps saying she'll get the car fixed, but she never did.
  • In the book, Mama started crying when the car wouldn't start, and Sister followed her back into the treehouse while Brother went to find Papa. In the episode, Mama started crying while trying to get the car to start. Both Brother and Sister join in with Mama as she cries.
  • In the book, the Bear family had a meeting just as Papa came back from the woods and Mama stopped crying. In the episode, Papa calls everything off for the day after seeing his wife and cubs cry.
  • The family ending up switching bags is not shown in the book.
  • In the book only, Sister takes riding lessons in the end. In the episode both Brother and Sister take riding lessons.
  • In the book, after cutting back on the number of activities Brother takes baseball and computer club while Sister stays with ballet and riding lessons, (it is unknown if they stayed with soccer). In the episode, Brother takes a break from karate and stays with baseball (it's unknown if he stuck with computer club), Sister stays with art and ballet, and they both stick with soccer since they made the playoffs and riding lessons.

Trivia[]
